Marek Domański

Marek Domański


Marek Domański (born 1954) received M.S., Ph.D. and Habilitation degrees from Poznań University of Technology, Poland in 1978, 1983 and 1990 respectively. He was with Ruhr University Bochum, Germany in 1986-87 and 1990-91, as a DAAD and Alexander von Humboldt Fellow, respectively. Currently, since 1993, he is a Professor at Poznań University of Technology. He is also the Head (Director) of Chair (Department) of Multimedia Telecommunications and Microelectronics at this university. In 1999, he got the professor title from President of Republic of Poland.

Prof. M. Domański headed many research projects on image and video compression, image and video enhancement and restoration, digital television, 3D video, multidimensional digital filters and telemedicine. Recent activities include industry-oriented research on 3D video, advanced video and audio compression techniques and as well as on video analysis and video surveillance. The respective research projects have been founded by European Union, NATO and Polish public institutions. He also led several industry-founded research and development projects with Mitsubishi Electric, Halliburton Energy Services, Samsung Electronics, Fraunhofer Institute - HHI Berlin, Advanced Digital Broadcast (ADB), TVP SA (Polish Television), Evatronix, Orange Labs.

Prof. M. Domański serves as the head of Polish delegation to MPEG and he actively participates in MPEG (under auspices of ISO and IEC) and JCT-3V (under auspices of ISO, IEC and ITU-T) standardization activities, in particular in the following projects: MPEG-4 Scalable Video Coding, Universal Speech and Audio Coding, 3D Video Coding. He also chairs Technical Committee 288 for Multimedia in Polish Committee for Standardization (PKN).

The research results include highly ranked technology proposals for international standardization within ISO/IEC: scalable video compression technology submitted in response to MPEG call for proposals (scored as one of the best – MPEG Munich, March 2004), SBR improvements for Universal Speech and Audio Coding (2010), 3D video coding submitted in response to MPEG call for proposals (scored as one of the best – MPEG Geneva, November 2011).

Prof. M. Domański leads the team that provided many important results of industry-oriented research. These results include but are not limited to: one of the very first commercially available AVC/H.264 video decoders in digital television set-top boxes (2004), innovative MPEG-4 AAC HE decoder implementations (2005), AVC video encoder for test bitstream generation (2006), original audio and video codec for interactive television (2005), original network-on-chip-based FPGA implementation of AVC video codec (2007), new technology for geophysical data compression (2008), AVC-bitstream transcoding technology (2009), worldwide-known multiview test video sequences for 3D video research (2009), digital watermarking technology (2010), depth estimation techniques (2010), 3D video HEVC-based compression technology (2011), stereoscopic system for automatic measurements of moving vehicles (2012), preliminary demonstrator for free-viewpoint television (2012), HEVC implementations (2013).

Prof. M. Domański is an author or co-author of over 200 peer-reviewed papers in journals and proceedings of internationally recognized conferences. The contributions were mostly on image, video and audio compression, image processing, multimedia systems, 3D video and color image technology, digital filters and multidimensional digital signal processing. He has already advised 18 PhD dissertations finished with PhD title granting. He also authored 3 books and some book chapters. There is the 650-pages “Digital picture” (in Polish) book among them.

Prof. M. Domański was appointed as General Chairman and host of several international conferences: 29th Picture Coding Symposium, PCS 2012, Kraków 2012; 15th European Signal Processing Conference, EUSIPCO 2007, Poznań 2007; 73rd Meeting of MPEG and 16th Meeting of JVT, Poznań 2005; International Workshop on Signals, Systems and Image Processing, IWSSIP 2004, Poznań 2004, International conference on Signals and Electronic Systems, ICSES 2004, Poznań 2004 and others. In 2013, he co-chaired 10th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Video and Signal-based Surveillance. He served as a member of various steering, program and editorial committees of international journals and international conferences. He served as Area Editor of Signal Processing: Image Communications journal in 2005-2010.

Since 1996, he is an elected member of the Committee of Electronics and Telecommunications of Polish Academy of Sciences. He chairs also Section of Signals, Circuits and Electronic Systems within this Committee. In 2005, he was a recipient of the highly recognized Professor Award “MISTRZ” of Foundation for Polish Science.

Prof. M. Domański is lecturing multimedia systems, introduction to multimedia, digital television, video engineering, multimedia systems and techniques and system theory at Poznań University of Technology.

    Abstract

    Most research results in video watermarking refer to the embedding of messages into uncompressed video, which needs full decoding and then full encoding of the content. In some applications, such a method is too complex, and watermarking of compressed bitstreams is required. Watermarking of compressed bitstreams is more difficult as the number of bits is very limited, and the compressed video is very sensitive to all modifications that may yield visible artifacts in the decoded watermarked video. In the paper, an original watermarking method is described for HEVC-compressed video. The main idea of the technique is to embed a message into nonzero residual transform coefficients in such a way that potential drift is limited. The watermark detection is based on reference, unwatermarked video. The experimental verification demonstrates the strong robustness of the embedded watermarks.

    Abstract

    In the paper, two preprocessing methods for virtual view synthesis are presented. In the first approach, both horizontal and vertical resolutions of the real views and the corresponding depth maps are doubled in order to perform view synthesis on images with densely arranged points. In the second method, real views are filtered in order to eliminate blurred or improperly shifted edges of the objects. Both methods are performed prior to synthesis, thus they may be applied to different Depth-Image-Based Rendering algorithms. In the paper, for both proposed methods, the achieved quality gains are presented.

    Abstract

    The paper presents Improved Adaptive Arithmetic Coding algorithm for application in future video compression technology. The proposed solution is based on the Context-based Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding (CABAC) technique and uses the authors mechanism of symbols probability estimation that exploits Context-Tree Weighting (CTW) technique. This paper proposes the version of the algorithm, that allows an arbitrary selection of depth D of context trees, when activating the algorithm in the framework of the AVC or HEVC video encoders. The algorithm has been tested in terms of coding efficiency of data and its computational complexity. Results showed, that depending on depth of context trees from 0.1% to 0.86% reduction of bitrate is achieved, when using the algorithm in the HEVC video encoder and 0.4% to 2.3% compression gain in the case of the AVC. The new solution increases complexity of entropy encoder itself, however, this does not cause an increase of the complexity of the whole video encoder.

    Abstract

    The paper reports the results on virtual navigation in a sports hall. The video data is gathered and processed off-line thus producing the multiview plus depth representation of a scene. This representation is an input to the rendering server. Even a typical PC computer is able to serve a number of users that freely and independently navigate in real - time and watch virtual video. The users are able to navigate in the scene changing the virtual viewpoint and virtual view direction. The service is provided through a webpage, so a viewer does not need to install any software on smartphone, tablet or notebook. The paper discusses the technical solutions together with the rationale for their choice.

    Abstract

    In this paper we introduce an algorithm for omnidirectional virtual view synthesis based on Omnidirectional Video plus Depth (OVD) format. The implementation is done on the basis of View Synthesis Reference Software (VSRS) developed by MPEG of ISO/IEC. Also, we address the problem of lack of benchmark data disallowing objective quality assessment. We present a method for generating test images in OVD representation along with example omnidirectional images and omnidirectional depths, called “Poznan Hall 360”.

    Abstract

    In the article we deal with the problem of camera positioning in sparse multiview systems with applications to free navigation. The limited number of the cameras, though makes the system relatively practical, implies problems with proper depth estimation and virtual view synthesis, due to increased amount of the occluded areas. We present experimental results for the optimal positioning of the cameras, depending on two factors – characteristics of an acquired scene and the multi-camera system (linear or circular camera setup). The results show the correlation between the number of occlusions in the scene and a gain from using camera pairs instead of uniformly distributed cameras.

    Abstract

    The paper presents the concept of a practical free-viewpoint television system with purely optical depth estimation. The system consists of camera modules that contain pairs or triples of cameras together with the respective microphones. The camera modules can be sparsely located in arbitrary positions around a scene. Each camera module is equivalent to a video camera with a depth sensor and microphones. The hardware requirements, the video and audio processing algorithms and the preliminary experimental results are reported. In particular, for such systems, a compression technique is discussed that is more efficient than the new 3D-HEVC technology. A set of new test sequences obtained with the use of camera pairs are presented.

    Abstract

    In the paper, we propose a new method for the virtual view synthesis called as Multiview Synthesis. In our approach, virtual views are synthesized using two neighboring real views, but the disoccluded areas are not inpainted, but filled by the information from the further real views – additional views, traditionally not included in the view synthesis. The whole synthesis is performed with triangles rather than with individual pixels. In the proposed Multiview Synthesis, additional steps of adaptive color correction, blurred edge removal and spatial edge blurring are also included. The experimental results show that both the objective and subjective quality of the synthesized views is significantly higher than the quality of views obtained using the state-of-the-art MPEG reference view synthesis software.

    Abstract

    Possibility of selection of a particular reference picture from many previously encoded frames is one of the reasons of significant extension of time necessary for encoding of a video sequence with HEVC. Search of motion vectors within all available reference pictures for every PU (allowed by the HEVC standard) and selecting the best one, significantly enhances coding effectiveness but requires big computational effort leading to long encoding time. A fast method for selection of the best reference picture would be a source of shortening of the encoding time. This documents reports and verifies a method for fast reference picture selection in which reference picture list is pruned basing on the size of the PU under consideration. This way the number of reference picture necessary to look at the during motion vector search is reduced. Foundations of the reported method are the results of statistical analysis of the actual selected reference picture (considered by the encoder as the best in terms of RD) during encoding of the particular PU size.

    Abstract

    The paper considers the influence of a lossy compression of multiview video on the quality of estimated depth maps. We have encoded a set of views with commonly known compression techniques used in compact IP cameras: HEVC (MPEG H part 2 / H.265), AVC (MPEG 4 part 10 / H.264) and MPEG 2 part 2 / H.262. Basing on the decoded data we have estimated depth maps and rendered a set of the intermediate virtual views. A drop of the quality was studied by comparison of virtual views rendered out of the depth maps estimated from an uncompressed video. The obtained results show that with a reasonable compression rate, lower quality of virtual views is acceptable for real implementable FTV systems.

    Abstract

    In the new HEVC standard, there are 35 intraframe prediction modes. Therefore, real-time implementations need fast mode pre-selection to reduce the computational load of cost comparison for individual modes. In this paper, a simple technique is proposed to reduce the complexity of the Unified Intra Prediction by decreasing the mode candidate number evaluated in the Rough Mode Decision step. We call this approach hierarchical as we decrease stepwise the angles between the directions of the prediction modes that are tested. Obviously, the fast mode selection results in significant complexity reduction obtained at the cost of choosing a sub-optimum mode related to slightly reduced compression performance. In the paper, it is proposed how to calculate the trade-off between encoder complexity and compression performance, using the ratio of relative coding time reduction and average bitrate increase estimated for constant decoded video quality. Extensive experiments prove that this ratio is much higher for the proposed technique than for many other techniques from the references.

    Abstract

    ISO/IEC MPEG and ITU-T VCEG have recently jointly issued a new multiview video compression standard, called 3D-HEVC, which reaches unpreceded compression performances for linear, dense camera arrangements. In view of supporting future high-quality, auto-stereoscopic 3D displays and Free Navigation virtual/augmented reality applications with sparse, arbitrarily arranged camera setups, innovative depth estimation and virtual view synthesis techniques with global optimizations over all camera views should be developed. Preliminary studies in response to the MPEG-FTV (Free viewpoint TV) Call for Evidence suggest these targets are within reach, with at least 6% bitrate gains over 3D-HEVC technology.

    Abstract

    In free-viewpoint television, high-quality depth maps are substantial for a virtual view synthesis for free navigation purposes. In this paper, we propose a new method of depth map quality improvement and resolution increase. Our method is intended for low resolution depth maps acquired through estimation using multiview video. The proposed depth map quality improvement is based on segmentation of an acquired high-resolution image. In the estimated depth map, searching for outliers is performed in the neighborhood created from similar segments in the acquired view. Experimental results show high effectiveness of the presented method of depth maps refinement, especially for object edges.

    Abstract

    This paper presents a proposal of depth estimation method which employs empirical modeling of cost function based on Maximization of A posteriori Probability (MAP) rule. The proposed method allows for unsupervised depth estimation without a need for usage of arbitrary settings or control parameters, like Smoothing Coefficient in Depth Estimation Reference Software (DERS), which was used as a reference. The attained quality of generated depth maps is comparable to a case when supervised depth estimation is used, and such parameters are manually optimized. In the case when sub-optimal settings of control parameters in supervised depth estimation with DERS is used, the proposed method provides gains of about 2.8dB measured in average PSNR quality of virtual views synthesized with the use of estimated depth maps in the tested sequence set. 1

    Abstract

    In the paper, we describe the extensions of the 3D HEVC compression technology aimed at improved compression efficiency for multi-view sequences acquired from arbitrarily located cameras. Our proposal refines the inter-view prediction by replacing the horizontal shifts with the true mapping in the 3D space. This implies changes in several coding tools, which we describe in details. The paper also reports experimental results on the comparison of the proposed solution to the 3D-HEVC standard codec. We also discuss the influence of the number of views and the view coding order on the compression efficiency.

    Abstract

    Rate-Distortion Optimized Quantization (RDOQ) is an encoding optimization technique that may be modified with no implications to the bitstream compliance with the standard. In the paper, we propose an RDOQ variant with exact cost estimation resulting in higher compression ratios as compared to HEVC Test Model. This improvement is obtained at the cost of the complexity increase that may be scaled by replacing the individual steps of exact estimation by the simplified ones from HEVC Test Model. In that way, a family of RDOQ variants is created. The performance of the exact variant from this paper defines a kind of the performance limit for RDOQ.

    Abstract

    The paper reports the hitherto obtained results of the research project that deals with scene representations that are suitable for free navigation around the scene. These scene representations are acquired from a limited number of cameras located around the scene. The project is aimed at the development of an efficient compression technology and the experimental environment for testing such technology. The paper reports some new multiview test sequences with the circular camera arrangement, including the hybrid ones that have been acquired using also the depth sensors. Finally, the paper also briefly reports the recent results of the new compression technology being under development. This technology outperforms the state-of-the-art 3D-HEVC.

    Abstract

    In this paper, a detailed analysis of the content of the bitstream, produced by the HEVC video encoder is presented. With the use of the HM 10.0 reference software the following statistics were investigated: 1) the amount of data in the encoded stream related to individual frame types, 2) the relationship between the value of the QP and the size of the bitstream at the output of the encoder, 3) contribution of individual types of data to I and B frames. The above mentioned aspects have been thoroughly explored for a wide range of target bitrates. The obtained results became the basis for highlighting guidelines that allow for efficient bitrate control in the HEVC encoder.

    Abstract

    For the new HEVC compression technology, the analysis of accumulation of quality losses in multi-generation coding is still an open problem. In this paper, we describe the results of extensive experiments that demonstrate quality loss accumulation in 300 encoding-decoding cycles using the HEVC codec in the All Intra mode. For consecutive encoding cycles with constant encoder configuration, the coding quality loss decrease much slower than for JPEG 2000. However, for SD resolution, the HEVC intra-only encoder provides lower bitrates than JPEG 2000 with the same video quality. Therefore, even after 300 cycles, the HEVC All Intra usually provides lower bitrates than JPEG 2000 with the same decoded-video quality.

    Abstract

    In this paper the results obtained for homogenous Cascaded Pixel Domain Transcoder of AVC bitstreams are reported in order to show the expected transcoding efficiency gain/loss. A wide set of test video sequences has been used in experiments and in total 19200 bitstreams have been encoded and examined. It has been proved that there is a universal dependency between the quality, defined as ΔPSNR and bitstream reduction. ΔPSNR is described as the difference between quality of the transcoded material and the original material that could potentially be encoded at the same bitrate as the transcoded one.

    Abstract

    The paper focuses on two problems: 1) analysis of bitrate contribution of I and B frames in encoded HEVC data stream, and 2) analysis of distribution of HEVC syntax elements in I and B frames. The relationship between sizes of I and B frames located at a different levels in hierarchical coding scheme was experimentally determined, as well as contribution of HEVC syntax elements in encoded streams of I, B0, B1, B2, and B3 frames. The results are presented in the paper. All presented results concern a wide range of QP values in a video encoder.

    Abstract

    The paper presents analysis of frame partitioning in the next generation video coding standard HEVC. Complex study on frequency of the particular coding unit, prediction unit and transform unit sizes selection made by the encoder compliant with HEVC technology is included. General conclusions based on extensive experiments for HD video sequences are presented. Such knowledge may be the first step to the development of more efficient mode selection algorithms.

    Abstract

    A computationally inexpensive watermark schema for MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 streams that use local mark strength adjustment minimizing visible artifacts is presented. The local mark strength adjustment mechanism and watermark embedding mechanism operate on residual data. This approach minimize the number of operations needed for video bitstream decoding and subsequent watermarked video data encoding. The experimental results included herein, described for real-world MPEG4 AVC/H.264 encoded HDTV video bitstreams prove its robustness to complex attacks, especially camcorder recording attack.

    Abstract

    We propose a new coding technology for 3D video represented by multiple views and the respective depth maps. The proposed technology is demonstrated as an extension of the recently developed high efficiency video coding (HEVC). One base views are compressed into a standard bitstream (like in HEVC). The remaining views and the depth maps are compressed using new coding tools that mostly rely on view synthesis. In the decoder, those views and the depth maps are derived via synthesis in the 3D space from the decoded baseview and from data corresponding to small disoccluded regions. The shapes and locations of those disoccluded regions can be derived by the decoder without any side information transmitted. To achieve high compression efficiency, we propose several new tools such as depth-based motion prediction, joint high frequency layer coding, consistent depth representation, and nonlinear depth representation. The experiments show high compression efficiency of the proposed technology. The bitrate needed for transmission of two side views with depth maps is mostly less than 50% than that of the bitrate for a single-view video.

    An image coding method.     Abstract

    The paper describes watermarking of compressed video bitstreams. This technique is proven to be very fast and robust against various attacks including camcorder recording attack. The watermark is embedded using indirect modifications of transform coefficients in selected P- and B-frames. In the watermarked bitstream there exist sequences of watermarked pictures interleaved with sequences of unmodified pictures. The unmodified pictures serve as a reference for the watermark detection. The experimental results described for real-world MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 encoded HDTV video bitstreams are included.

    Abstract

    At a receiver terminal, true 3D video provides ability to watch views selected from a large number of available views. Such ability is needed for the forthcoming 3D video applications like free-view television, autostereoscopic displays etc. Delivery of many views through communication channels is a challenging problem that has to be solved in the near future. In this paper, we study delivery of real 3D video using the state-of-the-art compression technology. Considered are the issues related to 3D video data model as well its application for generation of video from arbitrary virtual viewpoint. Included are respective experimental results.
